and straight away I have thought of something not in the rules... - creating a magic item will always take time whilst you research it and experiment with how to make what you want to happen, happen.
Otherwise known as "lots of fun for the GM if you botch the roll"...

ok... - we can do that... - how about this: your level in a sphere is your bonus to your relevant skill in that sphere on a base of 12... - with no INT bonuses: you are all doing this magic instinctively in a way that bypasses normal intelligence. So level 6 in a sphere gives you a base roll of 6 +12 = 18. Make snese? - about what you were thinking? And I make no apology for making the starting point 12: you are supposed to be GOOD at this stuff! In D&D you are looking at either a + to a d20 roll or a DC. So I was thinking like it is in D&D at the mo except use sphere instead of attribute. We will start with prof bonus +2 I guess. i.e. attack spell sphere 6 is d20+8 against target AC. Using a skill would be d20+8 against a target DC set by you (easy 10, medium 15, hard 18) Someone resisting our magic, they roll against a DC of 8+prof+sphere (DC 16).

I am happy using the D&D skill system for Ragnarok. The hit point and damage system are slightly at odds with how magic is described. My question is are we focusing too much on what D&D has and loosing sight of the bigger picture?

Well yes - I'd agree there! But I know that whatever we pick will not please everyone, so I'm going for a nice, least-worst option, you know?
