See if this fits:
Cog (actual designation: 15-J-73) served in the (insert great old war here), and was part of a sizeable detachment of his kind that were often tasked with the most perilous missions/sorties (acting as mindless shock troops).
However, the J-73's had always been a bit 'twitchy' and would, on occasion, display signs of independent thought; and to begin with this was exploited - to make them more capable soldiers (as it made them more able to adapt the to changing tides of battle).
Though by encouraging (and sometimes augmenting) this behaviour, several J-73's also began to show signs of becoming self aware ...which, in turn, made them less suitable for their previous (often suicidal) roles - with some actually laying down their weapons and refusing to take part in the continuing (sometimes senseless) slaughter of their 'brethren'.
As such, when Cog began to show similar 'symptoms', he was promptly deactivated and put into storage - just before his battle company took part in the defence of (insert famous Rorke's Drift type battle here - but one in which all his 'kinsmen' were destroyed) that earned them much respect (so much so, that the red cog emblem upon his chest will be easily recognisable to anyone in the know).
That being said, Cog has recently been taken out of storage (after being rediscovered in an old forgotten storage chamber - after a century or more of gathering dust) - so that he may be observed, and his progress monitored - more as a curiosity than anything else.
