Here's another one I had: does the magic of Jarl natives work off-planet? - I mean I could understand why a clerics spells might stop working as the god concerned had never thought he would have to power spells across interplanetary distances... - but is a wizard or sorcerers spells going to stop working when they leave Jarl? As I mentioned last night, my intention is that as we are playing Empyrean, those rules will be used. IF the characters should happen to return to the Jarl world at any point and have to face off against loads of D&D monsters, then they will be re-statted into Empyrean. The magic will work in a similar way to Psion powers, possibly with a few weird extras, as they're 'aliens' so have strange powers (like necromancy for example).

another question: how big is the Empyrean? - how many systems? - and how many systems does each of the races have? Just trying to get an idea of size: if each race has about 10 systems for a total of around a hundred - that's a lot different in feel / tone to each race having hundreds of systems. And another one: how common are psions in the general population? - what percentage of people have these powers? - that also makes a difference in the one of the campaign. The Empyrean is not that big in terms of the universe. I have put a new page in the rulebook which you may not have seen which has some info. There are basically 7 systems near to each other, each of which is the homeworld of each of the main races. Each has between one and ten habitable planets, as well as numerous moons. Further out are more worlds that may or may not have been populated. Further out still are sparsely populated worlds or even those where hardly anyone has been (or they have been but they never came back to tell the tale). I have a star mapping program which shows all this but it is a bit out of date and not easy to show in 2D. I will bring some print-outs next week. (I have of course got detailed information on every single world in the galaxy, just in case you thought I was making this stuff up as I went along). Psions are relatively rare. The Path were the last race to join the Empyrean, about 80 years ago, so the incidence of mind powers has increased over that time. Most people on developed worlds know of the existence of these powers and vaguely what they can do but probably don't know any actual Psions. Most common people would find the powers scary and unusual. As a percentage of total population it's probably 5% in big cities, but less than 1% everywhere else. Adventuring types like you lot, about 50%. Dave's characters, 100%.

Sounds reasonable.
Half of me is "hell yeah - hunting dragons with a rapid-fire heavy plasma-cannon!"
And the other half is "feck that! - there's a reason they're universally feared y'know?"

Hi everyone, I have been working on my Empyrean rules, updating them and including many of the changes that have been suggested. I would appreciate any comments that you may have. Here is a link to the google document. You should be able to view the file but not edit it. Hope this works. Empyrean v3.0Here is a link to the new character sheet. Character sheetI have created an Excel Character sheet to add up all the mods. I do not guarantee the calculations and I have omitted Androids. The Cells in Blue are the ones you need to alter. Almost all the other Cells have formulae. Do not forget to clear the mods on the second tab before adding your own. You should pay careful attention to the skill descriptions as many of your abilities as you increase in level are not included in the Excel file. Empyrean.xlsx (26.55 KB)

Empyrean.xlsx (27.88 KB) Updated Excel Character sheet. Skills now blue as they should have been in the first place. Body Development added in. Workbook set up for one off Bruiser (no powers).

So... Is there any way to get psion sensitivity after character creation? Asking for a friend...

I've answered my own question - it's got an asterisk so you can take it later by converting skill points to background points at 1 to 3.
Next question! - can you buy off detrimental modifications or mutations with earned background points? (Some off them would definitely need roleplaying to do - like not having a nemesis anymore as you've defeated or befriended them - some of them you could easily rationalise / hand wave like "he's now eaten so much fish he's no longer allergic to it")

Remember that 3 background points costs you a skill increase so that is quite a lot. If I was being a kind and generous GM I suppose I could even give out bonus background points for good roleplaying, or doing some of those things you mention like defeating the arch enemy Also, if you can think of other fun background mods good or bad, let me know.

Aha yes - I was thinking of one: the good old "bloodthirsty" disadvantage: if someone injures you in a fight you can only stop if you make a will power save for -1: or at -2 you can't stop at all until they are dead - or at the very least unconscious and bleeding..
I wasn't going to take my full allotment of background points... But there's so much fun stuff to take and all of the negative backgrounds I can take look like they're actually fun and will supply future plot hooks... I'm tempted by distinctive appearance, and possibly an allergy or phobia...
