Jeremy Crowley is the sort of bloke you don’t really notice. He’s a nice enough guy but once you’ve talked to him for five minutes you’d probably feel awkward and move on. He works in a lab, testing new drugs - he’s clever, with a PhD in genetics, but the work is pretty monotonous. In his spare time he’s a major geek. He goes LARPing, so he keeps himself fit, and has studied judo and fencing so he can handle most weapons. The hobby he spends most time on though is the comic that he draws and independently produces: a dark tale of demons and devils called Hell Bent. Jeremy’s other obsession is Julie, the cute girl who works in the lab. Although featuring in most of his fantasies, and her likeness having been used as one of the main characters in the comic, he has never actually plucked up the courage to ask her out.
Things started to go bad for Jeremy when the new supervisor started at work. Mark was an up and coming manager type, handsome and smart. They both took an immediate dislike to one another. A few snide comments at work soon escalated into full blown hostility. When he started going out with Julie, that was when Crowley’s blood really started to boil. Mark accused him of scratching the paint on his new Audi with his pushbike. The resulting argument at work got Jeremy suspended. The next day, he went round to see Julie, to see if she could help him. As her house was in semi darkness he went around the back to knock on a window, only to see Julie and Mark at it on the sofa. They saw him and called the police. An investigation into his behaviour was launched, leading to a search of his flat. The police found drug samples in his lab coat pocket that were restricted (probably planted there by Mark, he suspected); and the numerous images of devil worship and a semi-clad Julie lookalike didn’t really help his case.
After a night in the cells, having lost his job, Jeremy went home to drown his sorrows. That night, some local druggies, having been paid to do this by Mark, stuffed a burning rag through his letterbox. His whole house was destroyed, along with all his possessions and original artwork, and he barely escaped with his life. Lying in a hospital bed, with 75% burns, he was not expected to survive, and didn’t really want to. So mild-mannered Jeremy Crowley, given magical powers, just might have a tendency to transform into a raging fire demon!
