OK, so rather than relying on the GM to make a bunch of characters for their Tropes Town one shots, what if we simply used the standard array to make a bunch of our own (using 5e).
So that's 15,14,13,12,10, and 8.
This would ensure that everyone has reasonable stats ...plus we could make a character (of any level) whenever we feel like it (for example, I'm at a bit of a loose end tonight - so I might make a lvl 1 rogue).
Furthermore, if folks are particularly bored they could even make a couple of extra characters - so that they have a bunch to choose from, spares to use should anyone die, or to hand out to a gameless hobo that wants to join us for the night.
For example, the one-shot I plan on running will be level 1 - so if you want to make a character or two in preparation, just use the standard array, and you'll have something ready to go come game night (plus you'll then be reasonably familiar with his/her spells and/or special abilities, having created the character yourself).
Sound like a plan?

Definitely a goblin for me, rules are in Volo's Guide to Monsters (which I have). Goblin Bard with a perform (limerick) skill?

Or a Necromancer....
Definitely a goblin named Smeg.

Smeg the Mighty, goblin Bard of the Reghed barbarians (they're human barbarians, he was raised as an orphan).

yeah - I forgot myself there for a minute and went to do a serious character... - silly me!
So... - perhaps a hobbit necromancer... - or a half-orc bard... - actually - hobbit necromancer sounds perfect!

I dunno. I think elf wizard, human cleric, dwarf fighter, and halfling rogue are pretty tropesy.

That's what I am after - going against trope with the silliest race and class combo possible, as these are one-offs that are definitely on the silly end of the spectrum...

What's wrong with a half Orc Bard I generated one for my brother one time, more of a Skald than a stereotypical Bard.

The Half-orc bard I'm planning would be more of a one man band... ...but not a good one

In Xanathar's Guide to Everything, they recommend limiting Player's to the PHB and one other sourcebook. Making it easier to GM and reduce the number of books a player will need to bring to the table.
It's probably a good idea but the only person it will limit is me with my crazy book buying.
