Idea for a one-off: you are a seasoned band of adventurers - say 10th level - and the Emperor of the West calls you in.
He gets his archmage to show you the divinations he has seen: the Orcs are mobilising an uber-horde of something like a million warriors and are setting out to invade the Empire now.
They can show you the route: it is across most of a continent, so covers desserts, mountains, plains and rivers - pretty much any type of terrain. Your job: stop them in their tracks for at least 10 days to get the Empire time to fully mobilise and charge all their magic items and so on.
The archmage can teleport you anywhere in their line of advance you want, and you get 25k GPS - or say 7.5k each to spend in the Royal Magic Item Vaults (i.e. go pick out any items you want from the rulebooks up to the value indicated.) Due to the distance they have to come you can pick pretty much any ambush site with the terrain features you'd like.
If you survive you get to use the teleport scroll once more to get back to the Important Border Town that Must Not Fall.
Whadya think?

Cool. The only problem is that D&D is not good at mass combat. Might be better if instead of a million orcs you had some big badass monsters?

At 10th level even with a free choice of magic items a party of 6 cannot fight an army. On the other hand a party of 6 can divert or stop an army by joining it and playing havoc with the command structure. Possibly through impersonation or domination or geas. Discrete use of poison and spoiling food can slow the advance of the army. Demagogs can incite discontent and riots.
At the end of the day lots of roleplaying oportunity and when we get caught fight the big ugly.

that's what I am thinking: I don't imagine ANY party size could fight an army... - and if you tried you'd fail pretty quickly: this is about cunning magic-amplified ambushes, invisibility-cloaked sneaking and placing firebombs, that kind of thing - delay, confuse, ambush, assassinate, misdirect - whatever it takes to delay those greenskin feckers by 10 days.

My next (lvl 2) TT adventure actually involves orcs ascending The Crack and raiding the upper dungeons WITHOUT FILLING IN ALL THE CORRECT PAPERWORK (much to the horror of the DWP and HMRC*) - so they'll need to be dealt with by a bunch of brave adventurers! *Dungeon Workers Prerogative / High Marshall's Redistributors of Coin.

yeah - to run my one would need people to make 10th level characters, so I sure as shit ain't pregenning them....
So - purely as an intellectual exercise... - why don't people create them? - I am seeing a lot of 10th level assassins and such like...
