Okay, so the only two games of D&D 5th that I've played are Mage Punk and Return to Jarl.
Obvously I've noticed that there different types of damage and resistance. Once you've applied damage to your character, does the type of damage make a difference?

No, once you've applied resistance, damage is damage and affects you the same way.
