Captured by goblins and forced to work in the mines for two years were four young adventurers: Seijin O'Vale, a half-elven druid; Gragga Grok, a beardless mountain dwarf barbarian; Tarik Hammerhand, a hill dwarf monk; and Rimir Gorbella, a half elf warlock and bard.
Escaping from the mines, they came into possession of some purple crystals, which were being sought by the dwarves, elves and humans, as well as the orcs, led by the necromancer Kel-Drakkar. The crystals were to be traded to some strange visitors in exchange for powerful weapons.
Allying themselves with the dwarves at Crag Crorgar, the party recovered several more crystals and sought out the pieces of Kel-Drakkar's heart under the guidance of the elf Lady Glissandell. They successfully retook the dwarf fortress from the orcs, but Glissandell was tricked by Kel-Drakkar and put into a magical coma. After an encounter with a strange metal flying ship, the party journeyed to the desert lands, where they met two more companions: Jesus Bastir, an eldritch knight, and Ramas Ibn Aoth, a cleric of Set. After defeating the Serpent Queen and retrieving the final piece of heart, the six were able to return to Crag Crorgar, destroy Kel-Drakkar and his undead legions, and save Lady Glissandell.
The elf lady took them to the Great Forest, where they learned that the elves were under attack from gnolls and a growing army of hobgoblins. The party managed to locate the gnoll chief's lair, kill him and retrieve a third shard of obsidian. The elves determined that the shards from the gnoll, the Serpent Queen and Kel-Drakkar were part of a larger stone, and that there was a final piece held by the hobgoblin warlord, Ryloth. It was hoped that if this piece could be found, they could track down the sinister figure who seemed to be co-ordinating events - the dread lord Mordreth.
The elves asked the party to enter the underdark tunnels and seek out Ryloth. Seijin discovered that his parents, assuming he was dead, had embarked upon a dangerous mission to find the source of the vast hobgoblin army that was issuing from the underdark. The party met a drow guide, Xebex, who led them through the tunnels, following the route that he had previously taken Seijin's parents. They made good progress, travelling by magic carpet, and occasionally glimpsing the hobgoblins marching below them. After defeating a pair of driders, the party made camp and settled down for their first night in the underdark....
