Well... I am going to limit what you can do based on the level you buy, and the written conception of the sphere that you write (and I reserve the right to edit) ...But part of the ethos of this game is that it is very free form magic only limited by your own concept of how the universe works, and that you get pretty damn powerful... If someone tries to take matter as a sphere then they will get it... But at level 6 could perhaps only easily shape say stone, but not metal.. And couldn't summon or dismiss stone until level 7.. And then only in fixed amounts... And couldn't summon metal until level 8 and then only - say a cubic foot of iron a day...
So - come up with the ideas for spheres you want to buy, but I really don't want to limit it at this stage. (And to be honest I really want to get all of your help in defining what each level of a sphere can do)
And as for someone taking "mind" being more powerful than someone who took "illusions" I disagree... A Mind Mage could do mind control to make one person see something - but the illusion Mage could make the entire goblin horde see a dragon come over the hill - so an Illusion Mage will always be more powerful with illusions, and the mind Mage more versatile in general mind control. It WILL be balanced, but I want to let people define the areas they are expert in themselves... And I will admit that this is very much because of how the book did it in the exact same way... - which I know is pretty feeble, but I want to create a campaign for you all with a distinct flavour ,and I am very definitely trying to get away from the whole spell lists with defined areas and effects, you know?
I will also admit that there will be a degree of game testing at the start - and there may well be the need to retcon stuff... But the element of freedom of choice of spheres is (to me) core to the whole game. But if it turns out someone's concept of a sphere is way too disproportionate then they will be free to change it - or expand its concept with XP, or I indulge in GM handwavium.
And I fully expect someone who tries to pick a sphere that's crap to be roundly mocked during the character creation session.... And anyone who selects a sphere that's off-the-scale-obscenely-insanely-powerful to remember that's it's me who is GMing... And that it IS Ragnarok.. And that there are (quite literally) Gods of Death and Vengeance and Really Bad Shit out there who could become aware of you before you're ready for them....
Which is my attempt at a mature, adult way of saying "nah - get stuffed: you smell of wee!"
