Aboard the prison station, Nordheim IV, orbiting Barnard's Star, six prisoners with a previous association with the newly discovered world of Jarl awoke to discover they were about to be used as guinea pigs in the trial of a new mind-affecting virus. Speaking from their respective 'secure locations' a group of scientists known as Septicon, with a representative from each of the seven Empyrean races, conducted the experiment.
As the virus permeated the levels of the prison, the scientists issued commands such as 'put your arm in the air' and 'stand up and turn around three times', which the prisoners all followed. Our heroes did not feel compelled to follow these instructions but mostly did so anyway so as not to draw attention to themselves. When the cell doors were opened and the prisoners ordered to remain in their cells, some of the adventurers took the opportunity to look around. Finally, the order was given to 'disable the security robots', and the prisoners all left their cells, followed by the six party members.
With the security drones taken out of action, the prisoners attempted to access the upper floors. The majority of our heroes managed to find a way to the access ladder, either by persuading the riotous mob to batter down the door, or by bashing it in themselves in the case of the 'Brob. The Ulki managed to hot-wire the lift controls and was the first to arrive on the upper level. Unfortunately he was stunned by a blast from a security robot, and soon the other characters arrived, along with a horde of prisoners. As they discovered the lift leading to the command level, an order which did not seem to come from the Septicon scientists caused the prisoners to commit suicide. Leaving only our six heroes left standing, they headed upwards.
On the command level, they encountered a security drone which tried to subdue them, but the Path blasted it with a stolen pistol and deactivated it. By this time the Septicon scientists had initiated the self-destruct sequence and the party had only ten minutes to escape. Now the security drone had been deactivated, a man wearing a vac suit emerged from a storage locker. He explained that he was the Independent Observer, sent to oversee the experiment. He said that his android was preparing the ship for take-off but they must get the executor module and farcaster unit if they were to shut down the virus. He used his key card to access the control room, but then a small hole in his suit allowed the virus in and he shot himself in the head.
In the control room were the bodies of two android warders, an Ulki and a Path who appeared to have blown his brains out with an automatic pistol. Grabbing the executor module and the farcaster unit, the survivors headed out. They passed the escape pods which were inaccessible, although one was missing. Upstairs they discovered the Observer's ship tethered in place by four pylons. The android was attempting to cut through one of the pylons and explained that the bay doors also needed to be opened if the ship was to leave.
The Ulki went in to the ship with the android to prepare for take-off while the others continued to cut through the pylons. They managed to sever one by blasting it with John's pistol, and the 'Brob used his great strength to pull another partly severed one apart. The Path tried to disrupt the magnetic couplings with his pistol but with no success. Eventually all the tethers were released but the bay doors could still not be opened. The Ulki had to leave the ship and hot-wire the controls to open the doors as the countdown reached the last few seconds. As they accelerated out of the hangar, the Ulki and 'Brob just managed to get on to the closing ramp as the ship shot out of the exploding station. The android set course for the nearest system and just as another arriving ship was detected, they sped away to freedom...
