I know you are not up to much talking Kris, but what about running an online adventure one night a week (Tuesday?), with an emphasis on text based communication. Old school?

It kinda flopped the last time we tried something like that. So I'm not feeling it right now (because you know me, I'll over prep as usual, and get a little disappointed if/when it peters out )

what's that you say? - you're prioritising your mental and physical health over a game?
how very dare you!!
And: keep it up: gotta look after yourself innit.

Actually, I used to run some real-time/text only games ages ago (before voice/video chat was widespread) - so if I can find some of those out (i.e. with all the room descriptions etc. already typed up), I might see if I can salvage them (they were for 3.0 D&D, and they're probably backed-up somewhere).
I think I already had a go at converting one of them to 5E (as, you know, I like to have a few one-shots up my sleeve for emergencies) ...so I'll dig that out, and see how far I got.

Lots of ways to game via the web. I found these easily. Not sure if any actually work but with sooo much advice going free there is bound to be a solution which actually works.

Out of all the new(ish) ones, Roll20 is the one I'm most familiar with. Plus several folks here already have accounts from the failed AoS play by post game.

If you want to have a play around with roll20, I've set up a pre-game 'session' to try things out (i.e. to play around rolling dice, learn the basic commands, etc.)
For example if you type /r d20+4 ...it will roll 1d20+4 If you name your character bob and type /me opens the door and looks inside ...in chat it will display as "bob opens the door and looks inside"
If I've set it up right you should also be able to move around the PC tokens, but not the goblins.
Furthermore, there is an inbuilt D&D character sheet - so you can input all of your details into that if you like (and it will automate all the rolls) ...but it looks like a bit of work (so you could just use the /r command to begin with).
Anyway, if we go ahead with this, it will be new (back-up) characters that are adventuring in and around the town of Helix (i.e. not the BarrowMaze itself) ...and these characters can migrate over to the main game when a PC dies (if that's desirable) ...or possibly be hired on as henchmen further down the line.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Even with everyone agreeing to sit down at their computer at a set time, for a set duration (i.e. essentially the same as what you'd do IRL), the game will be slower if it's text based. It still works kinda OK (I ran a campaign for over a year that way, meeting for a couple of hours every Wednesday, before I met you guys ...so it can be done) - but it does break down quickly if folks aren't really paying attention. Plus it can be a LOT of work setting things up as the GM.

For a text based game I'd also suggest that you expand the chat window so that it fills 1/3 to 1/2 of the screen, and to use the slider to reduce the scale of the map a bit.

OK If you want to test things out (before committing to an actual adventure) I have set up a little encounter scenario that shouldn't take long to complete (no need to make a character or anything ...it's all ready to go). It's just something that will allow us to try out a couple of commands, get familiar with how the character sheet works, do a tiny bit of exploration, and run a 'quick' combat. If it turns out to be too cumbersome, we can abandon the idea and never speak of this madness again. If it turns out to be vaguely enjoyable, I can set up a proper adventure that may span a couple of sessions. Basically, lets give it a test run first, before I waste hours setting up an actual adventure. So, if you still want to try it, just give me a time and date that you can all* make it, and we'll give it a shot (note that it should last about an hour once everyone is logged in). *all of you that want to give it a try that is.

Are we fixing this as Tuesday nights? - if so: count me in from 8:30!

So just to reiterate, we are doing this tomorrow, Tuesday 22nd at 8.30.
So far we have me, James, Tony?
Jonny might be available?
Dave has gone deaf.
Dave! Can you hear us?
If we don't have enough Sammy could play too?

And just to reiterate, this first outing isn't an adventure as such ...it's just a test encounter to see how well/bad things work in a text based environment.
