Issue 1 - "You don't get this kind of treatment on the NHS"
Starring: Yukio Torriatte - a spoilt young girl from a rich family, badly burned in a fire (James) Thomas Atkins - a World War II veteran with no family, suffering from dementia (Kris) Kurt Kubric - a zoologist and drug addict, mauled by a lion (Martin) Josephine Halle-Judge - a famous opera diva, injured in a car accident (Dave) William Wiley - a homeless man, attacked by a mugger (Tony) Another unknown man who appears to be deceased (Lawrence)
The 'heroes' awoke, having been given too low a dose of anaesthesia. They were strapped to their beds. There was a nurse station adjacent, with a sleeping nurse. Outside was a corridor, with an armed police guard at the end.
Most of the patients began complaining about their treatment, but were ignored as the nurse and guard were asleep in the next rooms. William was the first to escape his bonds, having discovered that he could change the shape of his hands. A side effect was that his skin became a silvery, metallic colour as he did so. Yukio concentrated on removing her straps and managed to use telekinesis to achieve this. The two freed the others and they all discussed their predicament.
Yukio and Josephine were indignant at their treatment and barged in to the nurse's station. She reached for a pager to call for help, and they both tried unsuccessfully to grab it. Reaching from behind, with an elongated arm, William snatched the pager. They grabbed the protesting nurse and strapped her to a bed. Using her computer, they sent emails to their families and contacts, asking to be rescued. Meanwhile, Kurt had freed the unknown man, who appeared to have no pulse and not be breathing (although he was able to move and mumble incoherently). As Kurt touched him, he found that he could transform into an exact copy of the man. Using this power, he copied the nurse's appearance and also stole her clothes. The old veteran seemed confused with the whole situation, thinking that he was still in the war.
William had used his amorphous ability to squeeze into the ceiling space, and he located a security camera, which he disabled, a sleeping guard, and a locker room with their personal effects. Kurt, now disguised as the nurse, approached the policeman and took his phone. He awoke, and although he was fooled by Kurt, he was surprised by Josephine, and drew his gun. Yukio used her telekinesis to pull the gun from his hand, and ordered him back in to the ward and strapped him to a bed also. With his key, they opened the security door, rejoined William, and reclaimed their clothes from the locker room.
The Specials grabbed an unsuspecting admin guy and forced him to show them the way out. In the corridor, they headed for the stairs, but two doctors with syringes ran out of a lift towards them. Josephine emitted an ear-piercing scream, which flung the doctors back against the wall, and they slumped to the floor, bleeding from the ears. Upstairs, they found themselves on the main level of the hospital. More doctors tried to apprehend them, and Yukio used telekinesis to trip them, whilst the diva blasted them with another sonic scream, knocking them out. They headed to the main foyer, where even more guards and doctors approached, but were again repelled by the two enraged women.
Outside, they were hailed by Nurse Sharp, the one who had given them the serum. Filled with remorse, she had seen their escape on a camera, and was waiting in a van. They jumped in, and were driven to her nearby flat. The Nurse explained that Dr Veal had been sacked, and that although she knew he had a flat near the hospital and a house in the country, she had no way of contacting him. She examined the Specials, and William and Kurt revealed their powers to her. While Yukio and Josephine waited for their help to arrive, they all heard shouts from a nearby student tower block. As they looked outside, they could see smoke billowing from the side of the building....

Issue 2 - "Out of the frying pan"
As the Specials recovered at the nurse's flat, the man with no pulse regained the power of speech and revealed that he was Isiah Jonus, a mechanic who had been crushed when a car fell off the ramp. Seeing smoke from the nearby building, most of the group headed outside to try and help, while Thomas struggled with the new technology of a telephone to contact the fire brigade.
Josephine, covering her face with a scarf to avoid recognition, projected her voice to clear the ground floor of the building, then headed upstairs after Yukio and Isiah. Kurt went around the back and tried to turn himself into a monkey, but only succeeded in growing fur. William made his hands into gripping hooks, scaled the building and broke a window.
On the first floor, Ken Wong, one of the specials from the other ward, had lost control and was emitting blasts of flame. Yukio used her sorcery to conjure blasts of water, which extinguished most of the fire, while William attempted to rescue two students by turning himself into steps. Although initially unsure, they eventually exited the building by sliding down his metallic body. Meanwhile Isiah and Kurt led two more students to safety from the second floor.
All the specials, including Thomas who had finished his cup of tea, converged on the distressed Ken and attempted to subdue him. Most of their attacks were repelled by his heat shield, however, and Yukio took a blast of flame which would have incinerated her if it weren't for her protective spell. Eventually, by concentrating all their attacks, Josephine managed to blast him with a sonic pulse, which left him unconscious and nearly dead. They managed to revive him and exit the building before the fire brigade arrived.
Back in the nurse's flat they recovered and managed to get a few hours sleep. In the morning a police investigator arrived and questioned the nurse, while they hid in the bathroom with William disguised as a towel rail and Kurt as a inconspicuous dog. The policeman seemed suspicious, but eventually left, and the group discussed what they should do with the unstable Ken. He awoke and assured them he was recovering. The nurse was questioned about Veal's experiments, and she suggested they might find more answers in his old office at the hospital...

Issue 3 - "Teenage Mutant Injures Mortals"
The group planned their infiltration of the hospital to find out more about the experiments. Kurt practised mimicking others and tried to copy Masood but failed as he only had a picture. Yukio cast a spell to give herself the same power and turned herself into a doctor. The others used disguises. Meanwhile on the news, they saw that their pictures were displayed and the public warned about them. Reports came in of an incident in nearby Harbourne, so they decided to investigate.
As they arrived they discovered a traffic pile-up, and an angry teenager who appeared to have the power of telekinesis. There was a motorbike on a roof, and bins flying through the air. The TV crew were already there, filming. Yukio and William sneaked around the back of the restaurant building, while Kurt turned himself into a cat and approached the teenager. Apparently she was not fond of them, however, and flung Kurt on top of a bus shelter. Josephine projected her voice to try and calm the girl, but this disembodied voice just alarmed her more.
Thomas went over to the film crew and tried to 'accidentally' break the camera. This didn't work, but he successfully managed to keep them distracted by telling them about the war and generally being a belligerent old bastard. Yukio, now on top of the roof with William, tried to conjure a mind control spell, but had not done this before so it failed. William used his morphing powers to attract the girl's attention and show her that he too had been injected with the serum. She was initially spooked, and reacted by flinging a lamp-post at a bystander. Josephine reacted quickly, and managed to save the person's life by creating a barrier of sound.
Eventually, William managed to calm the teenager down. While Thomas continued to distract the film crew, Kurt transformed into a gorilla and freed the people trapped in their vehicles. One of them was badly hurt, so Yukio conjured a healing power and miraculously cured his wounds. The second time she was not so successful, however, and her attempt resulted in the man bleeding critically. Jo used her sonic energy to cauterise and seal the wound, allowing Yukio to repair the damage. She also healed an injured biker, and encouraged him to tell the world that they were trying to help and that they were not murderers.
As the emergency services arrived, William led the confused teenager away, and the others followed, Thomas having set up a future meeting with the news reporter. They reconvened at Yukio's student house, owned by her father, but with enough room for everyone, including Mr Dead who seemed to have made his own way there and was lying comatose in the garden. Now with a base of operations, the group discussed how they should proceed...

Yukio is going to be elated at the further development of her powers - especially the healing. She is going to get quite tipsy on a whole can of weak shandy, dancing around the room as only 17 year old girls can, and going on about going to the kids cancer ward at the hospital and healing all the kids.

Issue 4 - "Returning to the scene of the crime"
Kelly the telekinetic teenager had been promised a nice hotel, so Yukio gave her some cash and she went off to spend it. Josephine went shopping, and returned some time later with a load of disguises and different clothes. Meanwhile, the others settled in to their new home.
Next day, they decided to infiltrate the hospital and investigate Veal's old office. They tried to contact Nurse Sharp, but got no answer. Disguised as doctors and patients, they retraced their route back to the basement ward, with Thomas staying by the entrance as lookout. William used his morphing ability to investigate the roof space, while Yukio asked a young nurse for directions to Masood's office. When they had located it, William got inside from above, and opened the door for the others.
Inside, they searched for information, while Yukio kept watch outside. Isiah looked through some patient files, William found a locked drawer, and Josephine used a sonic pulse to open it. They found an old mobile, some letters and an exercise book with some of Masood's notes. In a filing cabinet were other files on the subjects of the experiments.
Somehow alerted, Masood and two doctors approached Yukio. One of them shot her with a dart, which temporarily removed her powers, and the other dropped a phial containing a purple gas. Josephine managed to stun them all with another pulse of sound, and they bundled them into the office, avoiding the gas. While William held the doctors with his metal arms, and Jo encased Masood in a cage of sound, they tried to get answers. Masood managed to call for help, before his pager was blasted to bits, and two more doctors arrived outside, pushing another phial of gas into the room. Thomas, alerted by the others, arrived and bashed one against the wall, while the other was knocked out by Kurt, who had transformed into a bear. Masood motioned with a finger and slit Josephine's throat. Yukio quickly staunched the wound, allowing the diva to scoop up the gas with her sonic power and use it on the doctor. Isiah bashed him on the head, and the group grabbed what they could from the unconscious medics and left.
Back at the house, Yukio's powers returned and she managed to heal Josephine's wound. They looked at the letters from the drawer and found Veal's Birmingham address. At the nearby flat, Kurt turned into a cat, and climbed on to the balcony to try and access the first floor apartment. Failing to get in that way, he returned to the ground, turned into a tiny frog, and hopped under the door. He was then posted through the letterbox, so he could open the door and let the others in...

Issue 5 - "What's that pig doing in here?"
Investigating Veal's flat yielded very little information, other than an address in Shropshire. Josephine and Thomas noticed an odd looking cabinet, which turned out to be Jacob Engels, covered by an illusion. He influenced the minds of both Jo and Thomas, but the others were not fooled. When he tried to escape, William trapped him with his metal arms. He was questioned, and before letting him go, the party discovered he was trying to find out more about the experiment, that he had visited the nurse and the hospital, and that he was a bit of an arsehole.
In an attempt to tail Engels, Kurt tried to turn into a pigeon. As he had not done a bird before, he failed and managed to get stuck as a pig 🐷. As the panicked porker projectile-pooed around the place, the Specials beat a hasty retreat and called a cleaner to deal with the mess.
Preparing to go to Shropshire, they hired a cab and driver. Before setting off, they saw a plume of smoke, and discovered that the nurse's apartment had burnt down. Thomas posed as the nurse's brother and questioned a policeman and the upstairs neighbour, who confirmed the deaths of Sharp and Wong.
At Veal's country residence, Kurt turned into a cat and slipped through a window, while the others distracted what appeared to be the only occupant. He determined that Veal was not at home and that the butler was keeping house in his absence. He did discover a locked drawer in Veal's bedroom that he could not open. The Specials retired to a nearby pub to plan their next move...

Issue 6 - "A series of unusual events"
Continuing their investigation of Veal's house, William squeezed his amorphous form through an air brick, and searched under the floor. He found his way into a wine cellar, and from there into a small room containing a desk, filing cabinet and some alchemical apparatus. He found files pertaining to the serum's manufacture and testing, along with an empty package from a Victor Forza in Italy. Downstairs, he was surprised by the figure of a pale woman, dressed in white, who appeared as if from nowhere. The butler spotted them both, seemed more surprised at William than the woman and attacked him with an umbrella. The woman looked at him quizzically before dissolving away, and William beat a hasty retreat.
Back at the pub, Kurt had managed to find a good picture of Veal and turned himself into a passable likeness. He rang the buzzer and was let in to the house by the butler, who was surprised he had returned without warning. In the bedroom, Kurt found a printed email from Forza and an empty canister. Apparently Forza, a vulcanologist, had sent Veal a sample of a 'silcate' some weeks ago. The butler informed him that there had been a break-in, and had assumed that 'Miss Wiles' had given him the details. While the butler returned to his TV, Kurt checked the rest of the house before leaving, presumably leaving a confused butler behind him.
The group elected not to stay the night, as the cabbie said he needed to get back. On their return to Birmingham, they were driven into an underground car park and were suddenly surrounded by armed police. Yukio used her new mind control spell to cause the officer to make his men lay down their weapons, while Will morphed under the car. From inside the SWAT van there was suddenly an explosion as a burning man appeared from it, having melted off his handcuffs. Yukio made the police attack each other, the burning man climbed on top of the van and began shooting blasts of flame over the heads of the police, while Kurt went 'ape-shit', literally. The raging gorilla was shot twice, but this made him more angry and he flung the officers aside. As most of the police continued to fight one another under Yukio's influence, and the others were knocked flying or avoiding fire, the Specials cleared a path for their vehicle to leave, telling the burning man to 'come with us if you want to live'. One of the cops managed to shoot out a tyre, however, and they crashed into a wall. William had commandeered a police car, so they all piled into that and scarpered. They dumped the cop car and went back home to rest after a very long day.

Issue 7 - "Graveyard Shift"
Before retiring to bed, the Specials discussed how to improve their media profile. They came across a Twitter feed which mentioned weird powers at a nearby graveyard, and decided to investigate.
At the cemetery, they discovered skeletons and zombies rising from the graves. Two teenagers were filming events and two other figures were spotted lurking in the shadows. The undead didn't cause too much problem - Bill torched several of them to oblivion, Yukio used telekinesis to smash some, and William impaled a couple with iron railings. Mr Dead tried to communicate with his kindred, but they seemed even more dead than he, so he bashed them to bits instead.
The instigator of all this turned out to be Joe Richmond, a goth who Bill recognised from the hospital. They questioned him, but he didn't yield much information, seeming worried and confused about his emerging powers. Meanwhile, Tommy had apprehended the other person, by throwing a rock at him as he tried to escape and knocking him out. This was Dick Slater, a private investigator. He revealed that he was working for a Mr Lau, who had an interest in the Specials and was offering money if they would meet with him. Mistrustful of this, they declined and said their farewells.
Kurt turned into a bat to tail Richmond and Slater, but became distracted by his new found ability to fly. Back at the house, they noticed that Slater had followed them and was spying from a nearby alley. William turned into a cat, and allowed Slater to follow him into the house. After he once again offered them money to deal with Mr Lau, Yukio decided to wipe his memory. They sent him away with the instructions: 'You will forget the events of tonight, us, and where we live. You will go in to Birmingham. Only then will you begin to remember....'

I'm sure I didn't leave such an obvious loophole in my instructions: I made it very clear he would never, ever start to remember us!
Nice try though...

I'm sure I didn't leave such an obvious loophole in my instructions: I made it very clear he would never, ever start to remember us! Nice try though... Lol, you definitely did. That's why I asked you to repeat it because I thought there was a loophole. You said it twice like that. Don't worry. I'm not so mean that I would ruthlessly exploit any loopholes, am I?

The second time you said it, you did slightly alter the end so thwre was no loophole.
