On the lower levels of a stellar freighter a group of handcuffed prisoners were shepherded along a corridor by a human scientist and a guard, having just had their memories of the last year erased.
One of the prisoners, a Cyanic Brob, decided to make a break for it and grabbed the guards pistol. He ushered the other prisoners in to a disused escape capsule that they were passing and activated the release mechanism, although the guard shouted that the escape pods were decommissioned and would not work anyway. The scientist attempted to mind control the Brob but he responded by shooting him the face. Much to the surprise of all, the scientist's face melted away, revealing a hideous brain-like structure surrounded in writhing tentacles. As the guard remarked 'What the hell is happening to you, Stromboli?', the creatures head reformed in to its previous human appearance. Then, using some kind of telekinetic power, the scientist pulled the gun from the Brob's hand and shot him with it. The escape pod's hatch closed and, despite being old, it launched off from the freighter. The prisoner's last view through the porthole was of the scientist shooting the guard dead.
Tumbling through the atmosphere, the escape pod's guidance systems and retro thrusters failed and the occupants were subjected to a very rough ride and crash landing on a desert world. One of the prisoners, a well-built human, managed to strap himself in, but the others were thrown around. The Path and Bakree managed to avoid serious injury, but the other Human suffered minor bruises, and the android's head was twisted all the way around so it was facing backwards.
Picking themselves up, they set about trying to remove their restraints. The Human tried to use his mind powers but his sonic blast was not powerful enough. The Path found a toolkit and used the welder to try to free the android, but being hampered by the restraints made it difficult and this also was not successful. Eventually the soldier managed to break his cuffs with brute force, and using a fire axe and the welder, the others were freed. The Path managed to fix the android's head so it was facing the right way round.
Searching the lockers in the pod yielded some survival equipment including 4 sleeping bags, a tent, 2 medkits and some food rations. Unfortunately, an infestation of swerms (horrible maggots that feed off garbage) had destroyed some of the food, although the Bakree decided to eat one of the swerms, confirming that they did indeed taste like shit.
The Path tried to fix the console so they could find out if the atmosphere was breathable but to no avail. Eventually the soldier grabbed a respirator and opened the door, discovering that they could at least breathe on this planet. Nevertheless the compass indicated that the nearest settlement was over 200km away across a featureless desert. With only enough food for 2 days, the situation was not looking too good....

The party made their introductions. They were Akara Taltras, a human Psion; Jonah PR1-E5T, an Android Specialist; Meldarth SunphoT, a human Soldier; Diana Dors, a Bakree Psion; Kryll, a Path Soldier; and J'eena-12, a Path Specialist.
Having salvaged supplies, they set off across the desert landscape towards the nearest life signs. Travelling mainly at night they managed to avoid the worst of the blazing sun, and rationed supplies so their food lasted longer.
Along the way they found a tree with razor bark, from which Akara managed to harvest several nutritious fruits, despite Meldarth being burned by it's acidic sap. They also found the grave of a simian creature from which they took an ancient sonic rifle and some red crystals. During the night some strange globules of energy provided some charge for the android.
Later, Akara stepped on a sand crab, but dodged before it could harm him. Jonah scanned the area with his enhanced vision which enabled Kryll to spear several of the creatures and further supplement the food supply. Later, the party were attacked by some kind of sentient sand creatures but Meldarth made short work of them with his axe.
Nearing their destination, with food reserves running low, they climbed a large rock to get a better view. This turned out to be a giant sand turtle, which attacked. As the others fought it, Diana blasted it with her mind powers and managed to disable the weak-willed beast. Perhaps it's corpse would sustain them until they reached what they hoped was civilisation....

Having eaten their fill of the Dune Turtle, Meldarth attempted to make some armour out of the shell. Unfortunately this didn't go to plan, and the shell went up in smoke. Our heroes continued their journey. They came upon an oasis, which proved so inviting that Kryll really wanted to stay. Akara tried to influence him with mind powers, but defecating in the pool turned out to be more effective.
Finding the tracks from some kind of giant slug, the party were later approached by a pair of ape-like riders. J'eena realised that these were Dabari - a race of sentient simians who originated in the Arabak system. Communication was difficult, and after some aggression from the creatures, a short battle commenced. One of the slug mounts was sent off in the wrong direction, and the other rider was incapacitated. He was tied back on to his mount and sent after the other.
Finally the party arrived in a small village of Dabari. The only occupied dwelling contained an ancient female who was freaked out by the strangers. Most of the populace were found at a 'stadium' wherein gladiatorial combat was taking place. Meldarth was chosen to compete, and he went up against the current champion - a tough looking Cyanic Brob. By some clever use of mind control from Diana and Akara the Brob was encouraged to lose the fight, and Meldarth was victorious. The crowd was baying for more blood however, and a giant lizard was released which the two of them had to face. With the Brob now an ally, the monster was defeated, and the two left the arena. Meanwhile Jonah had managed to win several redstones by betting on the contests. He hoped that it would be enough to buy some transport to civilisation....

Steve: I only went for a whizz in the pool: I was holding the defecating in reserve, just in case!

Oh yeah I forgot.
Always a good idea to save the big guns for a REALLY important situation.

Meldarth and his new ally headed up to the tent where they were given food. They also had to surrender their weapons but Meldarth was very reluctant. The Brob, whose name was Brobal, said that there was a city with a spaceport beyond the jungle and he had seen a freighter go in that direction about a week ago. He himself had taken a shuttle from the city but crashed in the desert. Rescued from starvation by the Dabari, he had been a gladiator for the last year or so. The Dabari wanted Meldarth to fight again the next day. He was reluctant to do so, but six of them pointed spears at him. He demanded that they should fight him instead. After a stand off they backed down slightly when he agreed to fight, although it was unclear what they were expecting him to do.
Meanwhile Jonah and the others managed to secure a deal to get two 'Trugs' (the slug-like mounts) but they needed to secure more funds. They also discovered a solar array, around which were parked two hover bikes and a hover 'raft'. The party rested overnight, Meldarth in the Dabari quarters, and the others in the tent.
In the morning Meldarth and Brobal entered the arena to cheering and encouragement. Two Dabari with darker fur were brought in to fight them. Meldarth and Brobal subdued them easily but did not kill them. The crowd bayed for blood. Meldarth, enraged, threw a spear at one of the Dabari who looked like he was in charge. Then, a giant snake and a tiger with a scorpion tail were released. Brobal fought the snake and despite being bitten once he managed to defeat the beast. Meldarth was also victorious, with Diana backing him up by mind-blasting the cat creature. The crowd enjoyed the spectacle and the two left the arena, intimidating the guards in to letting them keep their weapons.
By betting on the outcome, Jonah had managed to get enough funds to buy two Trugs and a cart/sledge. Kryll suggested they talk to an important looking Dabar who turned out to be the owner of the hover raft and lived somewhere outside the village. He was keen on Meldarth staying and fighting for him in the arena. He agreed, on condition that the boss would show them the location of the crashed shuttlecraft that Brobal arrived on. Travelling by Trug and raft the party headed out to the crash site. Attara stayed behind and attempted to source some drugs from the villagers.
Out in the desert the party found the crashed shuttle. They determined that it would not fly again, but that they could possibly salvage the electron drive and sonic thrusters. They formed a plan to construct a powered glider with a metal framework covered with parachute material. They aimed to fly off the edge of the plateau, over the jungle and to the spaceport....

Sounds like a lot got done: nice!
And: cobble together a glider from a wreck and fly it off the edge of a plateau... What could possibly go wrong?'

While Jonah and J'eena worked on constructing the glider, the others returned to the settlement. Once again Meldarth was forced to fight in the arena with Brobal. This time the judges had managed to get hold of a 'Cactaculus' which they were storing in the back of an old APC. Attara tried to free the beast before it entered the arena but was not quite quick enough.
The monster proved a formidable opponent, smashing the two warriors with fists tipped with poisoned spines. Furthermore, when Brobal hacked at it, a smaller monster was also created. Soon the Brob was bleeding heavily from multiple wounds and Meldarth was knocked unconscious. When all seemed lost, Attara managed to target the beast with a sonic blast which knocked it down. Recovering slightly, the two warriors managed to kill the offshoot and defeat the monstrosity.
The others collected their winnings and Meldarth chased down the overseers, finding them in a hut just out of the village. He threatened them and was promised compensation in return for sparing their lives.
Back at the crash site, Jonah had nearly completed the glider. With rope provided by the others, the engines and harnesses were secured on. The android assured the others that the contraption would fly them across the jungle to safety...

Empyrean: the epic space adventure continues Part VI: WTF?
After a failed test flight, when the engine became detached and ended up in the sand, Jonah's powered glider contraption proved surprisingly effective. Having attached the powerful engine more securely the party were propelled over the plateau and across the jungle in no time. The android managed to pilot the vehicle well and landed in an industrial area near the spaceport. Discovering from some Dabari security guards that they were in the city of Mon Koppa, the party set off to try and make enough money to pay for passage off world.
Our 'heroes' set about raising funds in a variety of different ways. Attara and Meldarth managed to make a few credits by slicing flesh off their innocent, faithful trug mounts and selling it to a kebab shop. Jonah determined to enter a 'stock car' race and set about modifying the glider with junk yard parts so it could compete. Kryll unsuccessfully tried to get a job due to his hideous bug-eyed appearance, but managed to secure a bodyguard position for Meldarth with a rich old lady. Diana tried walking the streets to sell her body but had more success by advertising herself on a specialist arthropod porn site.
What does the future have in store for our 'brave adventurers'?
Will Jonah triumph in the crazy car race? How will the kebab shop patrons react to the new trug flavours? Can Attara perfect his telekinetic powers enough to steal money? Will the Cactaculus video go viral? Is Kryll ever to be accepted into society? How will Diana's prostitution business fare in a competitive market? Can Meldarth bring himself to attend to the old woman's dried up wizened genitalia?
Find out in next week's thrilling installment....

While Meldarth continued discharging his duties to the old lady Kryll and Attara investigated the drones and finally managed to track them down to an office-like building with a 'new' second floor, known as 'Sigma Tec'. Kryll also managed to find out some info on the other race competitors while Jonah finished building his vehicle.
Next day, Diana went off to try and seduce one of the competitors and succeeded in tiring him out! As the race began, he put his car into reverse and crashed out of the race. As well as Jonah (with Kryll riding shotgun), there was an old human in a tank, a girl on a bike, two Dabari on a hover raft and another on a hoverbike. The main rival was last years winner, the notorious pirate Rik Skallion and his Ulki driver Gung Po, who had recently arrived with their Fael companion in their starship.
The race started, and quickly turned in to a skirmish, with the drivers ramming each other, the tank blasting away and Skallion throwing grenades around. After two corners half the racers were out with only Jonah, Skallion and the biker girl left. Attara took out the biker girl with his mind control and Skallion went down after being attacked by the tank. Jonah made good use of his electron drive boost and despite being nearly destroyed by a blast from the tank, he shot to victory.

Meldarth was still busy with his duties so the others decided to find a way off planet. They discovered that a shuttle was leaving in 5 days time to the more affluent Paradeem, where interstellar travel was probably more available.
Jonah received a job offer from 'Mr Cheese' and was directed to a garage at the edge of town. He, Diana and Akara arrived to find the place open but apparently deserted. In a back room they found the tank driver tied to a chair and electrocuted with his own jump leads. The Polizi arrived, and the three escaped through a skylight on to the roof. After a surveillance drone was called in, they exited the roof and managed to get back into town. Unfortunately cameras picked up Jonah and he was arrested and taken to the station. Diana and Akara holed up in a hotel and again had to escape through a window.
Jonah was presented with video footage of him entering the garage at a time before he was actually there, which seemed convincing enough to the Dabari for him to be charged with murder. He was told that he would be collected by a prison ship is 12 days time.
Suspecting that they had been set up by Skallion, Akara and Diana contacted him to try and make a deal but had no answer. Meanwhile J'eena and Kryll had been looking in to Sigma Tec and discovered that it was a recently set up recruitment agency. The party decided to enroll so the could discover more about it. After submitting their details they were aproached by an android, 'Stephen' who then took Akara to meet the 'boss'. She was a scientist who told him that he was already part of the program. She identified a small scar on the back of his neck and informed him that he had been part of an experiment in to a nano-virus. The freighter was the base and had recently delivered 'Sigma Tec' to this location, and moved on. She uploaded information on the program to Akara and the others. Akara suggested that she help get Jonah out of prison and she commented that although this was inconvenient, she may be able to help.
The party reviewed the information they had been given and pondered their next move.
