I am going for either Fighter-Eldritch Knight or Rogue-Arcane Trickster.
I might be a gnome.
Unfortunately there is no option to play a monkey-man...

If allowed (I think the concept has been approved): warforged paladin.

So that’s a paladin skin (and skin only) basically? Your powers will come from a different source than regular paladins- you’re not sure where just yet... and you categorically do not offer allegiance to anyone else. Also - you will need to be one of the paladins of a specific ideal and not a named god.
That’s weird.. but workable! - nicely discussed and blagged!

OK - but first explain to me why someone so useful to the Clan would not be kept at HQ and given everything they need to make cool new stuff?!

OK - but first explain to me why someone so useful to the Clan would not be kept at HQ and given everything they need to make cool new stuff?! Hmmm, maybe he is a bit of a renegade and has hidden his talents from others. Or he was tinkering and caused a massive explosion, so they want to get rid of him? Just an idea. I thought it fitted in quite well with the setting. Also have you seen this? Races of Eberron

and would you be going for the alchemist or gunsmith specialist? - and you are right - it does fit well with the setting - almost too well: there has to be a pretty good reason he would be sent out on missions instead of kept at HQ to make cool stuff. And that'll be your job to convince me...
And those Eberron races? - hmmm - which one are you looking at? - considering I have already allowed warforged...

and the more I think about it Kristian the more I think I have to ban paladin: to me there is no way at all that you can cast any healing or undead smiting without the power of a god behind you - and that breaks the "serve no masters but me" rule - and without healing and the other abilities the paladin is either nerfed to feck or rewritten (hastily - without any testing or balance).

I don't think it has to be 'god given' in 5e any more. From the PHB: Different paladins focus on various aspects of the cause of righteousness, but all are bound by the oaths that grant them power to do their sacred work. Although many paladins are devoted to gods of good, a paladin's power comes as much from a commitment to justice itself as it does from a god. And, as I say, I was gonna re-skin everything so it looks different. For example ...for 'lay on hands' he just produces some kind of healing elixir naturally (maybe as a by-product) that fills in an internal cansister* that he can offer to folks (or pour on their woumds) to offer releif. Similarily, for divine smite I'd be happy to change the type of damage (i.e from 'radiant' to 'lightning' for example ...and have it as some kind of electrical discharge). But if you dislike it, I can easily play a fighter or similar with a similar set of 'protect the meat people' morals. *so it can only be so full i.e. 5hp at lvl 1

And that'll be your job to convince me... Probably gunsmith. Not really decided on his character yet. I think he would be making stuff in downtime, like the mages have to contribute their power to the archmage's artefact. But he would still be allowed out on missions. Or maybe he needs to scavenge for materials? Or steal technology from rival groups? And those Eberron races? - hmmm - which one are you looking at? - considering I have already allowed warforged... I will probably play a gnome. I just wondered if you had seen the stats for the warforged race. Are you using the Eberron setting or just mining it for stuff?

Kristian yeah - there is still a commitment to a higher calling, even if it is an intangible ideal. You can't be walking around dedicated to Justice when you are doing the shitwork of a mages Clan. And besides - you are getting quick, easy and cheap access to magic items - and to balance that I want there to be more limited access to healing... - it needs to be rarer and more expensive both as a game balance and also in keeping with the setting / mood / genre. So yeah - go with a non-paladin and that'll be fine. Here's an example of what I mean: there is a small temple in the clan HQ - permanently manned by 2 clerics of [insert name of good god here]. But... - this is strictly a business relationship: the Clan pays - and pays a lot - to have them there as no one but a dumb-ass would do anything without a healer nearby if they could help it - and the archmage is a long way from being a dumb-ass. However - they cannot step into the HQ itself - they stay in their tower, that is built from an outcropping and needs a bridge to get to. Also - a small bit of history: the God of Magic was killed in the Godwar... - so there's no clerics for him... clerics of dead gods don't get any spells as by definition the god can't power them.
