Figured might be a good idea to start new thread to keep character discussion seperate from the discussions about filberts halfling love child. :-)
So yea the Main roles laid out in runners companion are:
Close Quarters combat
Fire Support
Infilitration
Investigation
Magical support
Matrix support
Negotiation
Transportation
Other roles that can be usefull to have
Demolitions
Leader
Logistics
Medic
Tactical coordinator
It is very common and can be usefull for team members to cover the same roles but you want to try and avoid having two characters being specialist in the same fields.
So Chris has said he wants to play a Pimp Mage, that is big on Spirits summoning and magical support and face skills.
That ticks the close combat (spirits), magical support and negotiation boxes.
Now if someone else wanted to play a mage or mystic adept I would suggest focusing on the combat or infilitration aspects but that is no reason not to have some skill with spirts or other forms of support spells but i would avoid making it your primary focus.
While spirits can be used for Close combat it is often more effective to have them as back up for when stuff goes down so having someone specialised in close combat wouldnt hurt.
It is well worth everyone having some degree of social skills unless your concept goes aginst it as the face cant always be there when you need to talk your way through a situation. But having someone who bulks up on Charisma, ettiquete and buys the gear to help (emoti-toys being an awesome investment for the price) to handle the deals and the stand-off is a must.
James - Your indicision about combat bunny, mage, fixer suggests Mystic adept might be the path for you. Some magey skills some crazy adept powers, possibly a lil bit of cyberware (although this does negativly affect your maxium magical abilities).
Stat up for maxium ninjing, spells like detect enemies or detect life and improved invisibility makes sneaking easier. And the increase reflexes spell dumped in a sustaining focus or the improved reflexes adept power makes you super fast then throw in adept powers like critical strike and killing hands and your getting into ninja terrirory.
A mystic adept combat bunny mage would tick close combat and depending on build: infilitration, fire support, magical support.
Marvs suggestion was weapon specialist/ street samurai gun bunny.
Based on the predator reference you are going for the brick shithouse type so ork or troll might be your friend at this point. However trolls do require weapons build to fit thier size which will limit what scavanged weapons you can use without penalty, but they are nails.
Pure gun bunny is of limited use when stuff doesnt need shooting so you might want to look at expanding the focus a bit. Moving into armourer and mechanic type areas might not be a bad plan and some investment in a tricked out combat vehical would cover some of transportation role although I think becoming a fully blown rigger would be too much. Depending on background it might make sense for you to pick up a lil bit of demolitions skills as well.
Ok at the moment we are quite lacking investigation and matrix support. Mages with the right spells can cover some of the onsite investigation has they tend towards high logic skills.
But having someone with the skills and contacts to investigate the job, the target and your employer can be invluable in runs. They are often the big picture person, factoring in info from the rest of the teams specialist areas to figure out the whole. They also are called on when the team is playing catch up or needs to figure out what happened (who took the person you were supposed to extract and once you now that where are they likely to be headed). They also do the legwork finding out info on who or what your going up against, who they are linked to and what repercussions might come your way. Investigators are also often best placed to cover the teams tracks so that AAA meagcorp does kick your door down for nicking thier stuff.
Similarly matrix support is a vital role. Everything is wireless and linked to everything else pretty much. Without someone to hack the security system and turn off cameras or dig through systems to find the paydata, runs are going to be tricky. Having awesome cyberware is great but without a matrix support its only a matter of time before someone hacks your PAN and shuts down your cyberarm in the middle of a fight. Matrix support role also lends its self to the rigger with drones approach as well. Like with every concept the more roles you cover the less well you do all of them but a decent hacker and average rigger or visaversa isnt difficult to achieve.
It is well worth everyone investing at least a point in first aid and buying a reasonable rating med-kit. And at least one of you putting a few points into first-aid for the more serious wounds. Another option is investing in the vehical mounted auto-doc system.
If there is a role that no one wants to cover you can leave it, it will just limit what jobs you get offered and will make some trickier. If its an integeral part of run i might provide an NPC to cover it.
