so; current thinking after a good look through the matrix sourcebook is that it looks like a lot of fun... - but it might be a little too close to the dayjob to be true escapist fantasy, you know? (and before anyone comments: NO - my dayjob does NOT include hacking into dragons mainframes whilst trolls beat down the door and mages chuck lightning bolts - OK?!) - but it does include a lot of computers, servers, networks and tech-support...
anyway; will talk more tonight!

Fair enough. Personally I would think being a shadow running hacker/ rigger would be different enough from day job not to be a chore but its up to you matey.
Ok so Steve, Sarah and Marv have mostly done characters now. - Steve is infiltration ninja with some spell casting skills and close combat skills - Sarah is a social monster high end face/ grifter. Who is also a superfast adept with pretty good unarmed fighting skills. - Marv is superfast minotaur gun bunny in a heavy military grade armoured suit (think 40k space marine)
Kris - Is i think still planning on playing driver/ grease monkey and probably rigger. Chris - Is still planning on playing his voodoo pimp mage using the full voodoo tradition.
James and Diane are still undecided as yet.
I think between the skills the group has already or was planning to have you have most of the roles covered. - A solid close combat character wouldnt hurt but isnt a requirment - You would definatly benift from having a hacker - At the moment the investigator role is going to be covered piecemeal by the group working together. But could be helped by addition of high logic and intuition character with perception skills and solid contacts.
Of course you dont have to cover those roles, they are just there to give you an all round team.

Well... - if the hacker role is truly needed and not covered, I would go with a full on hacker; but - I'd warn you now dude; I'd need a lot of help / support until I got my head around the rules! - part of the reason I am hesitant is to be honest that I would be playing a character that I'd really need to know the rules to play to full effect; knowing the way things are done and the really obvious noob traps to avoid, you know?
Failing that, Tannhauser is really shaping up to be a solid close combat bunny; definitely taking mystic adept, with a two third focus on physical adept skills and a one third focus on mage spells... - with the definite intention of taking the dracoform metavariant; ability to turn into a mini-dragon? - oh hell yes! - but none of you would know this in-character at the start!

If you dont want to play a hacker then dont feel you have to.
I havent played SR in over 3 years and have never run it before, everyone including myself is going to have to take a while to get up to speed on the rules no matter what they are doing.
If its something your character would be aware of I will try to give you a heads up, but remember your characters are fairly new to all this so some things are mistakes you have to learn in game. And that aplies to everyone not just you.
Ok we are now up to 2 rare and one extremly rare meta-type this is rapidly turning into a team of freaky weirdos.
You did read the whole description on drakes didnt you? And you are aware of peoples general oppinions regarding dragons yes? Also you do understand that when you change forms you cant use any of your normal equipment or gear or speak?
You do realise that drake + mystic adept + an average magic rating is a quater of your BP gone and most players spend close to the max 200 on stats and over 100 on skills. and normally at least 10BP on gear

I like the fact you needed to clarify that, in case we thought you were taking kai to a place called beavers with all the highly inappropriate imagery that might entail :-p
Sorry I am easily amused.
Had any more thoughts on SR character are are we still cogitating?

OF COURSE I needed to clarify the usage of "Beavers"! - partly because I knew that it would amuse you all and also because - well - if it is possible to misconstrue something for comedic effect than I know EXACTLY which table of roleplaying reprobates will do so!
And yes; I am going to take your exhortation of not playing any character I don't want to, to heart and forget about the hacker for now - at least until I know the system a bit better; is it safe to assume we'd be able to hire an NPC one?
I am going to go with my first instinct and create Tannhauser; forget the Dracomorph add on and go for the combo adept / mage concept.

so; I am gradually closing in on what I want to play... and the result is... - a mage in the "occult investigator" mold!

"all" I need to do is now decide if this type of person meshes with the mental image I have of "Tannhauser"... - and I am sure you will all be glad to hear that the answer is "yes"!
Just got to decide attributes, skills, spells, tradition, gear and so on now...
Is there a mage tradition for neo-Pagan / Wiccan?

ok well you need do decide on meta-type.
There are a wide range of traditions in street magic pg 35 onwards, hedge witch pg41 or wiccan pg 42 are probably closest but have a read through and see if any stick.
If you are being a mystic adept you need to decide how much magic you want and how you are going to split it between magic power and adept powers.
Are you going to be pure spell casting or are you going to take spirit summoning+binding skills as well? Cos more skills you have the more points you have to spend to be reasonable at it.
Gear wise if your an adept you probably dont want any cyberware which is a big expense so you shouldnt have to put too many BP into money which is good cos mages burn through BP at character creation.
You will want a decent willpower, a solid logic and intuition and a passable charisma. And you probably want to beef up which ever one of those three is your drain stat, which depends on tradition.

yep; that wicca tradition looks good: i'm having that.
meta-type... - dunno; will let you know; from some of your previous comments I might not survive out of character for long if I said "half elf"...
also; based on your previous stories about shadowrun games, it seems that the ability to bind spirits is just about the pinnacle of magical effectiveness: is this correct? - is it worth expending the points on it?
I'm thinking about forgetting about the adept powers; would it be considered splitting myself 3 ways if I was a mage and adept and could summon / bind spirits?
